Assessing climate adaptation for holistic and justice-based solutions.

The devastating impacts of climate change are already impacting communities and ecologies on a planetary scale.

However, designing just and effective adaptation strategies is a complicated affair and increasingly the scientific and development community is grappling with maladaptation.

Maladaptation is when adaptation strategies increase, instead of decrease, the exposure and sensitivity to climate change impacts.

Climate adaptation approaches can exacerbate both the problem intended to resolve any existing issues such as inequality and marginalisation.

Our team has created an assessment tool

Our evidence-based and holistic assessment tool is grounded in justice-based pathways toward avoiding maladaptation, particularly in the planning phase of generating pathways to adaptation.

We have established a set of criteria by combining holistic and localised values and best practice principles to guide the project.

“Successful adaptation will require in-depth understanding not only of the impacts of climate change but also the risk management implications.. failing to advance research beyond a narrow focus on impacts may result in maladaptation”.
